Biographical Note
John O'Grady was an Irish born American priest who was an intellectual force and tireless advocate of Catholic social justice principles and their practical application for the lives of people world-wide.
O'Grady was born on March 31, 1886 in Armagh Feakle, County Clare, Ireland. He was educated, 1902-1909, at All Hallows College, Dublin, and was ordained on June 24, 1909. Shortly thereafter he immigrated to the United States where he served in the Diocese of Omaha, Nebraska, as Assistant Pastor at St. Cecilia's Cathedral in Omaha, 1910-1912. He was also Associate Editor of the diocesan weekly publication, the Omaha True Voice.
O'Grady began graduate studies in economics at The Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, D.C. in 1912. His mentor was social reformer Msgr, William Kerby, who had founded the National Conference of Catholic Charities (NCCC) in 1910. O'Grady assisted Kerby in organizing the NCCC meetings in 1912 and 1914. O'Grady earned his master's in 1913 and wrote a thesis titled 'Irish Land and Irish Progress' and his doctorate in 1915, with his dissertation titled 'A Legal Minimum Wage.' While working on the doctorate at CUA he also took summer courses at the University of Chicago and an economics seminar at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore.
O'Grady became an instructor in economics at CUA in 1915 and the associate professor of economics in 1919. He became a full professor of Sociology in 1928 and served a problematic term as the first dean of the CUA School of Social Work, 1934-1938. At this time the National Catholic School of Social Service (NCSSS) was administered by the National Council of Catholic Women (NCCW) who were then part of the National Catholic Welfare Conference. The rival schools had often tense relations until the matter was resolved by the 1947 merger of the two schools into one NCSSS at CUA. O'Grady also taught sociology at Trinity College in Washington for many years.
O'Grady became Secretary of the Committee on Reconstruction and After War Activities of the National Catholic War Council in 1918 and, while there he persuaded John A. Ryan to produce the document known as The Bishops' Program for Social Reconstruction (1919). A prolific writer himself, O'Grady produced numerous articles and pamphlets and five books: A Legal Minimum Wage (1915), An Introduction to Social Work (1928), The Catholic Church and the Destitute (1929), Catholic Charities in the United States: History and Problems (1931), and a biography of Levi Silliman Ives (1933). He also wrote a lengthy unpublished memoir in the early 1950s and served as the editor of Catholic Charities Review from 1920 until his retirement in 1961.
O'Grady became the secretary of the National Conference of Catholic Charities (NCCC) in 1919 and held this position until retirement in 1961. During his tenure, he was instrumental in the professionalization of Catholic social services, traveling widely across the United States helping to develop many diocesan agencies and training their leaders, believing strongly that Catholic Charities had an important role in achieving social reform. While a proponent of the principle of subsidiarity, he nevertheless believed that there were situations that required federal intervention, including legislation, for social security, public housing, child welfare, national health insurance, and immigration reform.
Following the Second World War, O'Grady was active in the settlement of refugees and played a major role in founding the International Conference of Catholic Charities in 1951, serving as its vice president for ten years. In this role he represented the conference at the United Nations and also in several African countries. O'Grady became a domestic prelate in 1935 and was personally commended by Pope John XXIII in 1959 for his leadership in Africa. O'Grady enjoyed only a short retirement as he died in Washington, D.C., on January 2, 1966 aged 79. He was widely mourned in Catholic and non-Catholic circles alike.
Scope and Contents
The papers of Msgr. John O'Grady reflect his frenetic schedule and widespread activities in the field of Catholic social action and relate closely to the institutional records of the NCCC. The O'Grady papers are divided into five series.
The first series, Correspondence, 1932-1966, in boxes 1-13, consists of three subseries. The first is General, 1932-1966, in boxes 1-4, and are organized chronologically. They provide a general overview of Msgr. O'Grady's activities from the height of his career until his death. The second subseries, is Subject, 1934-1966, in boxes 5-10, and are organized alphabetically. Topics range from O'Grady difficulties as first Dean of the CUA School of Social Work in the 1930s to matters related to immigration, health care, and overseas travel. There are also messages received, both congratulatory and of condolence, related to several personal milestones or events, especially his priestly Golden Jubilee of 1959. The third and final subseries is Invitations and Memberships, 1939-1960, in boxes 11-13, organized chronologically. These files reflect his popularity as a speaker and widespread professional activities.
The second series, Lecture/Research Notes and Related Material, 1870(1905-1935)n.d., in boxes 13-19 are residue of his years as a student, teacher, and writer. This series includes typewritten and handwritten notes, handwritten notebooks, and miscellaneous textbooks in both English and French. Some of the notebooks are arranged by subject such as sociology, theology, psychology, philosophy, and history. Many others are hard to decipher because of the illegible nature of the handwriting.
The third series, Appointment/Guest Books, 1943-1966, in boxes 19-20, are organized chronologically. The bulk of these are O'Grady's professional appointment books, 1943-1957, whole the last item is a guest book of signatures of people who visited him during his final retirement years of 1964-1966.
The fourth and largest series is Writings, Speeches, and Publicity Files, 1881(1915-1966)1977, in boxes 20-33 and divided into seven subseries. The first subseries is Biographical Files, 1881(1915-1966)n.d., in box 20. This reflects a lifetime's worth of publicity and a good selection of biographical source material. The second subseries is Unpublished Memoir Correspondence and Manuscript, 1950-1955, in box 21. This is a valuable though incomplete account of O'Grady's life, primarily focused on certain key issues such as formational charities work in the 1910s and 1920s, depression era studies of rural worker displacement, and post-World War Two efforts to assist displaced persons. The third subseries is Unpublished Biographical Manuscripts by Saul Alinsky and Alice Padget, 1952-1955, 1970-1977, in box 22. This contains two unpublished biographies, decades apart, by celebrated community organizer Saul Alinsky and O'Grady charities colleague Alice Padget, respectively. The fourth subseries is Addresses, Speeches, and Testimony, 1927-1961, in boxes 23-29. This reveals the wide volume of publish speaking that Msgr. O'Grady did, including a considerable amount of testimony before various Congressional committees. The fifth subseries is Articles and Pamphlets, 1915-1959, n.d., in boxes 29-31. This has some material organized chronologically and others by subject. The sixth is Books, Monographs, and Surveys, 1918-1945, in box 32, which is a collection of O'Grady's various longer works including several of his books. The seventh subseries is Memorials and Tributes, 1966-1972, in box 33, that includes tributes and other activities at the time of his death, and also efforts some years later to hold an O'Grady memorial lecture.
The fifth and final series is Financial Records, 1933-1966, in boxes 33-35. This includes information on his retirement plan, bank statements, and various receipts including for medical service.

Acquisition Information
Shortly after the death in 1966 of Msgr. John O'Grady, late Secretary of the National Conference of Catholic Charities (NCCC), Catholic University of America (CUA) Archivist Rev. Michael Hall contacted NCCC to inquire about the possibility of depositing O'Grady's papers at CUA. NCCC took no action at this time but eventually NCCC records, which included the O'Grady papers, began to come to CUA. The O'Grady papers, some 35 boxes and 17 linear feet, were received as part of NCCC records that arrived at CUA in 1977-1978 and were removed in 2013 in order to erect a separate collection of O'Grady papers at CUA.
