The instruction program fulfills the mission of University Libraries and The Catholic University of America by collaborating with campus educators to equip our students with essential library skills and information literacy knowledge that they can apply to their classwork and to continuous lifelong learning.

  • Library skills refers to the basic skills needed to use a library to find physical and digital sources
  • Information literacy is a much broader concept that refers to the entire information seeking process from discovery to evaluation to use

See The Association of College and Research Libraries’ Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education for more information.

Requesting Instruction

To tailor library instruction to your class, we can focus on different aspects of library or information literacy skills, for example:

  • an orientation to resources available at the library
  • using keywords and evaluating resources
  • highlighting a specific database for an assignment

Reach out to your liaison librarian to discuss what would serve your students best.

Request library instruction using this form at least two or more weeks in advance so that we can discuss the goals of the session with you and ensure that space and time is available. Your presence is essential in creating a collaborative learning environment where your students engage fully with the librarians, and where they receive accurate answers to their class-related questions.

Online Tutorials

We also have an Intro to Library Research Tutorial that covers the entire research process and additional videos and guides on using library resources that can be embedded into your online classroom.
