The Oliveira Lima Library is a collection of books, manuscripts, pamphlets, maps, photographs and works of art that is dedicated to the history and culture of Portugal and Brazil. The original collection of 40,000 volumes was the personal library of the Brazilian diplomat, historian and journalist Manoel de Oliveira Lima (1867–1928).
The library holds 60,000 printed works—including books, serials, pamphlets, maps and broadsides—as well as more than 700 manuscripts. The Oliveira Lima Library is making available more than 1 million digitized pages from its collection. Included in the digitization are items from the 16th century to the mid-20th century on topics such as history, politics, literature, journalism, diplomacy, politics, law, slavery, religion, art, and culture. The collection contains books, speeches, pamphlets, official decrees, sermons, poems, plays, concert programs and theater, all related to Brazil and the history of Portuguese expansion around the world.
As the Brazilian sociologist Gilberto Freyre once said, the Oliveira Lima Library collection is "the cathedral of Brazilian studies in the U.S.A."
