Historical Note

Established as a Vatican chartered graduate and research center, The Catholic University of America officially opened as an institution of higher education in 1889. New York and Philadelphia had been considered as possible sites but the nation's capital, with its national and political importance, was chosen on sixty six acres of land incorporated in the District of Columbia in 1887. Bishop John J. Keane of Richmond, Virginia, was appointed rector of the new institution with the original curriculum consisting of philosophy, literature, and various branches of theology. In 1900, Catholic University was among fourteen institutions offering doctoral instruction that formed the Association of American Universities.

In the twentieth century Catholic University is a private and coeducational university with about seven thousand students almost equally divided between graduate and undergraduate. There are eleven schools: architecture and planning, arts and sciences, canon law, engineering, law, Metropolitan College, music, nursing, philosophy, social service, and theology and religious studies with about seventy bachelor's programs, one hundred master's programs, and about 60 doctoral programs. The Archbishop of Washington is the Chancellor of Catholic University and there is a forty eight person Board of Trustees, which includes twenty four clerics. There have been fifteen presidents (known as rectors until 1968), three of them laymen including the current president (since 2010) John Garvey.

Catholic University added undergraduate education in 1904 and the first yearbook, known as The Cardinal Yearbook, was created in 1916. It has been published ever since though it was on hiatus for a few years, 1918-1919 and 1944-1947, due to the world wars. It has also changed size and shape a few times though it has on average been about nine by eleven inches and two hundred fifty pages.

Scope and Contents

The Catholic University Archives generally retains three copies of each yearbook, though with some extrac copies for certain years. A reference set is kept in the Archives reading room for ready access while the other two copies are shelved in the Archives stacks area. There are 95 volumes for 1916-2016 though volume 51 for 1972 has two separate parts.

In 2012-2013, the WRLC Digital Practices Committee completed a consortium-wide digitization project, preserving the yearbooks of all the member institutions in digital form. These were scanned for digital preservation into the TIFF lossless format, and PDFs have been created for public access. There are links in the volume record below to these digital copies.

As historical objects, yearbooks can reflect the customs and perspectives of their times. Some of the images and language in these yearbooks may be seen as offensive to contemporary viewers. We have chosen to leave all of the digitized images intact as part of the historical record, though as with other records and objects in our archive, we do not necessarily endorse the views as depicted in the archival materials we make available to the public.
